A great result for the specialist Forage Rape “Winfred” was experienced by lactating cows at the farm of Roger Persey, Colliton Barton near Cullumpton. 22 acres of Winfred (a cross between Stubble Turnip and Kale, available exclusively from Oliver’s Seeds), was drilled in the last week of March.  Cows started to graze in the first week of June.  During the day, 150 late lactation cows grazed and another 160 mid lactation cows grazed during the night.

“One day last week Richard Quick, the farm manager, forgot to open the gate for the cows and we lost 2 litres per cow that day,” states Roger, who was delighted with the results and performance of his Winfred crop. The regrowth will be back fenced and grazed by heifers in the autumn.
